Overseas Research Scholarships 2008/09 - The University of Manchester

Overseas Research Scholarships 2008/09

The Overseas Research Scholarships (ORS) provide funding to support outstanding full-time postgraduate research students from outside the UK and European Union.

The awards pay the difference between the international rate of PhD tuition fee and UK/EU rate. Although ORS awards do not cover the UK/EU fee element or living costs candidates who are successful in obtaining an ORS award will be considered for additional Faculty funding to provide a comprehensive scholarship package (including full tuition and living support).

Applications for ORS awards for 2008 entry will be invited from October 2007. However, if you wish to be alerted once the application material is available please contact the Faculty ORS co-ordinator James Power at james.k.power@manchester.ac.uk

Eligibility

To be eligible for ORS consideration applicants must:
  • be liable for the international rate of University tuition fee
  • be able to demonstrate outstanding research potential and academic achievement
  • have not previously studied at PhD or equivalent level (either in the UK or overseas)
  • have not have held an ORS award before
  • have established contact with their proposed academic PhD supervisor at Manchester and have their full support for an award
  • have submitted a formal PhD application or be holding an offer of study for entry no earlier than April 2008.
It is essential that candidates can provide evidence of support for an ORS from an academic based at Manchester. Ideally this should be the prospective PhD supervisor from within the Faculty. If you are yet to establish contact with an academic regarding your proposed PhD study the Faculty can arrange to support you in finding a suitable supervisory match.

Awards are renewable for up to a maximum of three-years subject to satisfactory academic progress.
Existing students within the first year of their research (MPhil or PhD) in the Faculty are welcome to submit an application with the support of their academic supervisor(s) to aid progression into Years 2 and 3.

Academic criteria

ORS awards are highly sought after and therefore applicants must be of the highest quality in terms of research potential and scope for independent learning. The minimum criteria for any applicant are:
  • Academic achievements must be equivalent to a first class or very good upper second class honours degree. In the case of candidates with degrees that are not classified, the candidate must have attained overall marks placing them in the top 10% of their graduating year (preferably top 5%) or hold a Masters degree with merit or distinction. Candidates holding a Masters (or equivalent) are particularly encouraged to apply
  • They must possess outstanding promise and research potential as evidenced by research output (papers, publications), novel research findings or via supporting statements from their referees
ORS awards are not specific to any medical or related discipline and applications are welcomed from candidates seeking PhD places within any of our five Schools. The potential of candidates to excel in their academic field will be the primary consideration when awards are agreed.

How to apply

Full application information will be provided on this site in October 2007 for candidates seeking 2008 awards. In preparation for this potential candidates are recommended to arrange the following:
  • Contact with potential academic supervisors to discuss project proposals and your suitability for the awards
  • Submission of a formal online PhD application form
  • Preparation of previous and/or current degree transcripts (as these will be required within any application)
  • Participation on an English language proficiency test such as IELTS/TOEFL if yet to do so
  • Contact with the Faculty to express your interest in the ORS awards so we can notify you when the invitation for applications is announced later this year

Further information

Any questions relating to your eligibility for the ORS awards, identifying a suitable academic supervisor or applying should be directed to james.k.power@manchester.ac.uk

General information on the ORS scheme can be found on the national ORSAS website

Candidates for Faculty ORS awards will be notified as to the outcome of their application during February 2008.

Application deadline is 31st October 2007.

Following short listing, candidates will be invited for a 2-day interview in the first weeks of December 2007.

A Rough Guide to what happens at selection and interview

As we receive your applications, your referees are contacted by e-mail for their comments. All applications and references are assessed and short listed by the project Supervisors in the Institute. The Education Committee and Director then considers all the short listed candidates and selects those candidates to come for interview. At this stage we do not require certificates etc although they will be required later. Please do not apply directly to the University. If successful you will then be asked to apply on-line later to the University.

All students, irrespective of country or funding source, are required to attend for interview at which they will be asked to give a ten-minute presentation about a previous research experience. All reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed by the Institute.

Using the travel information we send you, you will arrive the day before the interview and check in at a local Hotel. Please keep all travel and meal receipts and the Hotel bill has already been paid. Please arrive at the main entrance of the Paterson Institute at 8.45pm of day 1 (maps supplied) where you will be met by Dr Graham Cowling, the Postgraduate Tutor. Over coffee, you will have the opportunity to load your presentations. Following a brief introduction to the 4 year PhD programme and welcome from the Director, Professor Nic Jones, you will get the chance to give your presentations to the potential supervisors and members of the Education Committee. Please use Powerpoint on USB pen or CD and plan to talk for no more than 10 minutes. There will be 5 minutes of questions at the end of each talk.

What shall I talk about? Many of you will have done an undergraduate project, industrial placement, or postgraduate research. In our experience these prove to make the most productive talks. If this is still proves to be a problem then please contact the Postgraduate Tutor who will suggest a topic to talk about. A brief introduction, a summary of the methods you used, results you have obtained and the conclusions (if any) you have reached. Please don't worry if you either didn't get results (it happens, and we appreciate that it is difficult to stand up and talk about negative results....but can be a great judge of character!) or haven't started your project (you will need to know what you will be doing!). We are trying to assess whether you think about your science, can communicate it and if you have a passion for the subject.

The audience will be the potential Supervisors and the Education Committee. Following this session, you can relax while some of our PhD and MD students give you a tour of the Institute. Ask them anything. Following a lunch for everybody, you will be given a timetable where you will get to speak to Group leaders for around 30 minutes about their projects. Also to members of the Education Committee who will ask all candidates the same general questions about themselves. At the end of the day, everybody, including students and postdoctoral fellows, is invited to a drinks reception in the Institute followed by a meal at a local restaurant.

The next morning we invite you back to the Institute and over coffee, ask you to select the Group Leaders/projects that you would like to further talk to about their research. This takes most of the day. Drinks and lunch will be provided and you will get an opportunity to fill in your expenses forms and give the Institute written feedback of your impressions.

On the Selection form there is space to select up to 3 projects that interest you from your own reading around the subject. Please look at project summary and the Research areas of the Paterson website. Look up some of the publications. You will be issued with a second identical form at the end of the second day, it is important to fill this in with your final choices of project to allow us to fit student, project and supervisor together in a successful 4 year partnership. Our selection policy requires you to be committed to joining us and for us to believe you have the right qualities to make you a first class PhD student. If we offer you a studentship we will attempt to give you either your first or second choice of project when possible. Please note that all the projects offered have undergone a rigorous selection process with external scientific review to ensure that they will make excellent projects for you.

It is clear from previous interview rounds that even students who feel that they have a very clear idea of what project they would like to do, can become captivated with different projects after talking to group leaders/students during their visit. We therefore encourage you to keep an open mind when talking with some group leaders who may not be on your list of choices. It is also clear that it will be useful for you to consider the option of first year rotations through upto 3 different laboratories. Please seek the views of the students who have selected this route for their studies, as they all find it a positive experience

King's College London

King's College London operates an annual scholarship scheme for students from Hong Kong. The College is indebted to the Alumni Association of King's College London in Hong Kong and Kwok & Yih who sponsor the awards.

The number and value of the awards made in any one year are determined by the selection committee. They have a maximum value of £4,500 per year and are available to both undergraduate and postgraduate candidates. The awards are normally made for the duration of the course, with a maximum tenure of three years.

Eligibility

Candidates should normally have received an offer of a place to study at the College before applying for a scholarship and plan to start their studies at King's in September 2007. Candidates must also be normally resident in Hong Kong.

The selection of successful candidates will be made by the selection committee at the end of August when summer examination results are available and will involve an interview in Hong Kong. The selection committee will consider and evaluate your academic achievements, your financial means, and your plans for what you will do after you graduate to reach their decision.

In addition, the Kwok & Yih Scholarship is open to undergraduate and postgraduate candidates applying for Law. One scholarship is awarded annually and has a value of £4,500.

We regret that we cannot accept scholarship applications from students planning to read medicine or dentistry.

Application procedure

Candidates can download the application form as a pdf document and should return their completed forms, together with a full curriculum vitae, examination records, a confidential letter of support from school or university department (whichever is relevant) and family means of support at their earliest possible opportunity, to be received by the selection committee no later than 31 July 2007, to the following address:
